Up for sale is one of the rarest pins made by costume jeweler, Marcel Boucher. The clip measures 2 1/4" long x 1 3/4" wide and is made from rhodium plated metal. The front has pearlized gray enamel with clear rhinestone accents. If you pull the 2 1/4" long pearl drop chain, the door opens to reveal a yellow enamel bird with a plaque reading "cuckoo". It is marked "Pat Pend" and has the MB Phrygian cap at the upper screw on the reverse. This pin made it's debut in 1940 and was featured in a February 1941 Vogue advertisement. There were several pieces in the "movable" series including a Cambodian dancer, Punchinello clown, and the iconic hungry pelican. According to the original advertisement, it came in 4 color palettes and retailed at a shocking price of $10 in war time America. More information is available in the Carla & Roberto Brunialti text, "American Costume Jewelry: Art and Industry 1935-1950 Volume 1". It is in very good condition with no loss of the original enamel and there are no missing stones. However, some have darkened with age. The pull chain mechanism and dress clip work well. There is some minor scratching on the reverse rhodium plate, but this is all normal wear in a piece of this age. |
